Under the Storm

On arrogant wings before the storm
some seemingly fortunate few sail awhile
but all plans of boys and men
become but talk of what had been.
There are laws and rules, and other laws and rules
and cheaters hardly know by which set to play.
for happenstance connections among well-grounded folk
gain new root while pretense breaks, turned over and sideways.
The way we count, an what really counts, are hardly the same.
